Abstract
In this study, the behavior of a cantilevered sandwich beam equipped with a piezoelectric layer is analyzed as a vibration energy harvester. The aim is to investigate the influence of composite layer configurations, variations in geometric and mechanical parameters, and modeling considerations on the harvested power and overall efficiency of the system. The beam was modeled using higher-order shear deformation theories and the finite element method. The effects of Poisson’s ratio in the composite face sheets, the core’s through-thickness strain, and the shear locking phenomenon were all carefully examined. Two different configurations of the composite layers-full and partial surface coverage-were considered. Numerical results revealed that the presence of composite layers enhances the output voltage and improves the performance of the harvester. Moreover, the higher-order model enabled a more accurate analysis of the effects of core thickness and fiber orientation. Parametric studies on the core thickness, tip mass length, and fiber orientation demonstrated that these factors play a significant role in tuning the natural frequency and improving energy efficiency. The findings further emphasize the importance of employing more precise and shear-locking-resistant models in the design of sandwich-type vibration energy harvesters, particularly for structures with substantial thickness.
